Most women will do anything in the pursuit of flawless skin, but when Valerie Grandury was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer at the age of 45, she decided she needed to change her approach to skincare from simply saving her skin to literally saving her life.

Meet the founder of Odacitè, a results driven 100% non-toxic luxury skincare line with a cult following that might not just change the way you look, it might actually change the way you live…

On your website it states, “from fighting cancer to fighting wrinkles”…Where did your beauty journey begin?

As a French woman my beauty journey started at as a young teen, introduced to the art of skincare by my two gorgeous grandmothers. I fell in love with this world of extraordinary potions and the delicious ritual of taking care of your skin.

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I knew that if I wanted to heal I had to completely remove toxins from my environment… including the extraordinary but oh so toxic skincare I had been using for years…

Not finding products that would bridge my French approach of skincare – luxury & results – with my “non-toxic” living I decided to create a line that would harvest the best of two world, the efficacy of French skincare with the purity of green California living.

Where were you at in your life when you were diagnosed with cancer?

I was 45, producing commercials all over the world, living in LA, partying too much, traveling through time zones like there is none, all of that raising two boys as a single Mom. Needless to say my stress level was a bit on the high side!

What treatment did you try at first?

Because my cancer was very aggressive and that I had three tumors, the recommended treatment was mastectomy, a very strong chemo called “dose dense chemo”, radiation followed by 5 years of drug therapy. All that with the hope of remission but no cure.

By the end of the chemo my immune system was so compromised my Drs said I needed a break to get stronger before I would start the radiation. A friend of mine told me about the Optimum Health Institute in San Diego as a place to go recuperate and do a detox from all the chemo that had been pumped up in my body.

What I learned there was a complete revelation, a different approach of treating the disease, instead of focusing on killing cancer cells they were talking about creating health, instead of looking it the symptoms, they were looking at the terrain.

I signed up for their certification program, stayed a month to learn the tools I needed to create health. After this, I was convinced that if I wanted to heal, I had to completely reinvent my life to remove all the toxins from my environment.

Back in LA, I told my Drs that for the next 6 months I wanted stop any treatment and focus on bringing health back into my body. They all thought I was crazy, told me I was going to die… But something inside of me was so sure this was my road the health, I did not waver and said: “listen give me 6 months, then put me in the pet scan, if I still have cancer cells we will resume your treatment.”

Six months later I was in the PET scan, there was no cancer cells to be found and it has been 13 years.

It is all about boosting your immune system so it can do what it is suppose to do, heal yourself. In order for this boost to happen, you need to liberate the immune system from all environmental toxins”

You went pretty extreme in your search for health, what changes did you make?

I went/study at the Ann Wigmore Institute and the Optimum Health Institute and, both have a similar approach. It is all about boosting your immune system so it can do what it is suppose to do, heal yourself. In order for this boost to happen, you need to liberate the immune system form all environmental toxins, ease the digestion process by adopting a raw vegan diet, calm you mind and emotions through meditation and yoga.

To achieve this, I quit my job, sold the big party house in the Hollywood Hills, moved to the unpolluted nature of Topanga Canyon, went back to school to become a health and wellness coach, adopted a raw vegan diet (9 month without any form of sugar, including fruits), practiced yoga and mediation daily.

Needless to say my newly adopted lifestyle detoxed a lot of people from my life, I was left with the important ones, the ones who truly cared for me, who were supportive and only wanted the best for me.

What was behind your decision to start Odacitè?

Odacité was born out of this healing journey, I went to my health food store to switch to natural skincare, and sadly all that was available was so far from my French philosophy of skincare; it looked awful, smelly patchouli was greasy, did not really do anything for my skin!

Not ready to cut corners when it came to avoiding toxins, I thought “it can’t be that difficult to make!”

After producing commercials all over the world I had build a little army of location scouts, and hired some to go and find me the best natural beauty ingredient form their country.

First one that arrived was green tea seed oil, used by the geishas in Japan to centuries to maintain gorgeous skin luminosity, followed by extraordinary Tamanu oil from the rain forest of Madascar, then seaweed from Ireland.

Quickly my kitchen turned into an apothecary lab, making serums, balms and lotions for private clients and myself. Through word of mouth I grew a large private clientele, after a couple of years it was just to big to be just a one person operation, and so was born Odacité.

Where are your products made?

All made with French “savoir faire” (know how), here in beautiful California, with magic ingredients from all over the world.

As counter intuitive as it may be oily skin need oil, why? Because when you apply the correct oil to oily skin, you actually tell you oil gland to stop producing so much oil, results are so quick!

You’re a big fan of serums, what if I don’t feel comfortable putting oil on oily skin? Why serums?

As counter intuitive as it may be oily skin need oil, why? Because when you apply the correct oil to oily skin, you actually tell you oil gland to stop producing so much oil, results are so quick!

Serums because they are so concentrated in active, and carried by oils for deeper penetration and faster results.

I’ve tried the Green Ceremony Cleanse and now I’d obsessed…

On a magical trip to Kyoto in January, I discovered the art of the tea ceremony and its four founding principles: Respect, Purity, Harmony, and Tranquility. It resonated so profoundly as these are also the founding principles for all our formulations.

On that trip I also discovered premium grade ceremony grade Matcha – the one we use in the Green Ceremony Cleanser – that has the highest concentration in chlorophyll and antioxidants. Chlorophyll is a potent detoxifier to the skin, and antioxidants stop free radical damage, which is responsible for aging!

The ceremony comes from the transformation of the powder into a delicious foamy fizzy gel, that you will take time to let glide on your skin and remove with our muslin cloth, like a celebration of skin’s health.

what makes all our products so rejuvenating and healing to the skin, no filler, nor chemicals, no preservative only ingredients that are essential to your skin’s health.

You use a lot of food grade ingredients and make products with no preservatives at all…how challenging is that? Why is that important to you?

Nothing great is ever produced without challenge. While a challenge it is also what makes all our products so rejuvenating and healing to the skin, no filler, nor chemicals, no preservative only ingredients that are essential to your skin’s health.

You were born in Paris. French women are famous for having a beauty routine- how do women in France view skincare differently from women in other countries, like the USA or Australia?

As a French woman I approach skincare as a delicious luxury, a moment morning and night that is a true pleasure, like a rendez-vous with myself, a feminine parenthesis in my busy schedule, a moment of self care and self love.

On the other hand I often hear from my American or Australian clients that skincare is chore: “I hate that I have to cleanse my skin at night… I have no time for a routine… if it does not hurt it does not work…”

One product at a time, I’m starting a new conversation on beauty, one rooted in the delicious French approach of skincare.

What are the biggest mistakes woman make when it comes to looking after their skin?

The rule number one is cleanse your skin every evening before you go to sleep, this is non negotiable!

Number two, use a serum adapted to your skin’s needs, most of us use the wrong products.
